This week seemed super short, but we were pretty busy! We went on
exchanges with some elders this week, and I had an awesome experience
while at a gas station. We were filling up our car just before
dinner, and we're about to pull out when a man came and knocked on our
window. We rolled it down and he asked us if we could help jump his
car because it wouldn't start, we said of course! We pulled over and
got everything hooked up, then we got talking to him. His name is
Tom, and he has gone through some rough things in his life. He served
in Iraq for two deployments and five of his buddies were killed right
in front of him. Recently his wife just up and left him, so he has
been questioning if God is really there. He said that he found a
church that has helped him a lot, but we asked him if he would like us
to come over and talk to him about the Book Of Mormon. He said he
would love to have us over! He gave us his address and told us to
stop by anytime. We are going to stop by him this week! I don't know
what it is about gas stations, but we always seem to find golden
Investigators there! Trey, the investigator we met at the Maverick
last week, cancelled on our lesson this week because he was out of
town, but we will meet with him this week for sure! I will always be
on the look when we're filling up the car, you never know when someone
is going to be ready to hear the Gospel!
We were able to do a lot of service this week, and it was awesome!
We weren't able to make it to help that lady out with her alpacas,
because our District Meeting went way over. Elder Callahan and I were
pretty sad, but to make it up to the lady, we are going to help her
draw some of her animals blood tomorrow, so we're excited to go and
tackle some alpacas tomorrow! We were at the Western Museum painting
some display cases, and there is this young new intern that just
started working there. We had a good conversation about what we do as
missionaries, so I think he will be a fantastic potential
investigator, and hopefully he'll want to meet with us. We are going
to give him a copy of the Book Of Mormon this week and see if we can
meet with him and his wife. I'm so excited for that! We are doing
another new service at the train depot museum, and we actually operate
these little remote control trains in the upstairs, and talk to all
the visitors when they come up to see it! This model train is pretty
sweet. An old guy built it in his trailer home, and hand made
everything, so they transported it here so the public could see it.
It is probably the best service we have! We play with trains, and
talk to people. We have had a lot of people ask us who we are, but
not anyone interested yet. I know that we will find someone who will
want to learn more! We also had the opportunity to go out with the
Wyoming Game and Fish this past Saturday, and restock beaver ponds up
in the mountains with Brook Trout. It was honestly my dream come
true, I've always wanted to do that! We got to go hiking, stock
thousands of fish, and talk to people. It was amazing to be back up
in the mountains again (they're not as pretty as mountains in Utah,
but I have to take what I can get:) haha), I absolutely loved it! I
love how through serving people in the community, we find
opportunities to teach. Jesus Christ is the perfect example of
service, and as we serve our fellow men, we are blessed. I know that
to be true! As we follow the example of our Savior, we can become
better people and share the thing that makes us the most happy, this
restored Gospel! I know that as you serve your fellow men, Heavenly
Father will bless you tremendously!
We had MLC this past Friday, and it was amazing! We talked about
so many things, but one of the things that stood out to me was when
President McMurray was talking about culture. He asked us what is the
culture in our mission? We talked about that very in depth, and made
a plan to help our mission get better to change our mission culture in
some aspects! I want to ask you all a question. What is the culture
where you live? Is it good, bad, anything you would change? I would
challenge you guys to think about these questions, and ask yourself
what you can do to help others focus more on Jesus Christ and the
principles He taught. The thing with a culture is it all has to start
with one change, one act of faith in order to change that culture for
the better. I know that as you set the example, and help others focus
more on the Savior, you will be blessed and you will see others change
for the better, and become happier in their daily lives.
We were having dinner with the Turners this past week, and we had a
wonderful lesson! We talked about setting examples. After we shared
a scripture with them, and testified about the setting examples,
Sister Turner started to cry. We let her start talking, and she told
us about all of her kids. Only two of her children are active in the
church, and the other five are inactive. We testified to them that
they are setting such a good example for their kids, and that someday
they will notice that and want to change. It takes time, but
eventually we all need the Gospel of Jesus Christ in order to be the
happiest we can be! We asked them if their was anything we could do
to help with their children out, and they said that we should go visit
their son in the Monterey Heights Ward. We promised that we would, so
on Sunday we went over and visited their son. We talked for awhile,
and he was really happy we came! He said his wife just got a new job
so she won't be working on Sunday anymore, so he said they will be
coming to church more regularly. We are going to meet with them this
week, to meet his wife and teach them a little lesson. I'm excited to
help the Turners out, because they are such an amazing family! I'm
confident that we can get their son to come to church, he has the
desire he just needs a little push. Reactivation is so important, we
can't wait to help him and his wife to come back!
While looking for less-active members, we ran into two guys
burning a huge pile of pine trees. We started talking to them, and
they expressed to us that they were not too interested in learning
more. We talked to them for awhile, and got to know them pretty well.
Randomly one of them opened up and said "you know, I would do business
with a Mormon any day more than I would with a Mennonite. I've never
been lied to by a Mormon, but I have by a lot of Mennonites" We
started laughing, because you don't hear that every day! Then he went
on to explain his reasoning. He went off on mennonites, and said how
much he respected us. It was super interesting, but we're glad we
could talk to them. I know that we made a good impression, and they
really liked us! Hopefully someday their hearts will be softened so
they will have a chance to learn about the truth!
Overall this week has been amazing! We have our Mission Tour this
Friday and Elder De Feo is coming to our mission. He is the first
general authority from Italy, so that should be cool! I can't wait to
hear from an apostle of the Lord! I hope you all have a great week,
and remember that Heavenly Father loves you so much! :)
Love
Elder Bailey
